Built in 1879, the Botany View Hotel is considered one of Newtown's oldest buildings. Despite its age, the hotel has been completely renovated under the passionate leadership of Luke Reimann with a modern twist whilst maintaining its old-world charm.

The bar is beautifully decorated with vintage furniture and an inviting atmosphere, making your visit nostalgic and enjoyable. At night, it's dimly lit, which creates a cosy and intimate atmosphere. It's a lovely spot for a first date.

The hotel has two storeys with the ground floor hosting the bar, pool tables, a pinball machine, and a stage for live music and trivia. Meanwhile, the upper level features private dining areas and an outdoor deck which is dog friendly, perfect for sundowners and relaxed gatherings.

The kitchen serves a good range of traditional pub food that caters to many dietary requirements. As with most pubs, the menu items are casual, but you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food.

A revamped pub menu with quick service

You'll feel right at home at this pub! The staff are friendly and full of character, and with a QR code ordering system, ordering your food is quick and efficient.

The beer selection is extensive, with a variety of local craft beers available on tap and a bottle shop within the premise for additional options. The cocktail menu is also impressive, with a selection of classic and signature drinks.

The newly revamped Botany View Hotel menu features a variety of dishes to satisfy all kinds of hunger. From pizza and burgers to pub classics such as fish and chips, chicken schnitzels, and steaks, your belly is sure to leave nice and full.

But it doesn't stop there. There are also unexpected dishes on the menu not often found at the local pub. Tacos, poke bowls, pot pie, and pasta also await you at the hotel. These small and large plates are sure to please all palates and tastes.

I found the hotel the ideal place for a relaxed night out with friends and family, or even a cheeky date. The rich history mixed with modern vibes will leave an everlasting impression on anyone who visits. It's exactly what you would imagine from a quintessential Newtown hotel.

Cocktails

With classic and signature cocktails at the ready, the hotel's cocktail menu will mesmerise you with its beverages. Sip on a classic mojito or margarita or try their range of fruity concoctions such as the Give Me The Frizz.

Cheese Platter

You don't often find a tasty cheese platter on the menu, but this is the perfect starter to pair with the hotel's wine selection.

Enjoy your cheese served with bread, quince paste, pickles, and nuts to create an experience of cheese exploration. It goes great with the live music on stage or while you're chilling in the rooftop garden.

You generally can't go wrong with a cheese platter like this but don't expect anything grand.

Tacos (Three Flavours)

With three tacos on offer, variety is definitely top of mind at this pub.

The fish taco is a must try. The lightly battered barramundi is served with avocado salsa, caper mayo, shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato salsa, and lime.

The beef taco was also delicious. It's a Korean-style taco with Bulgogi marinated beef, served in a crispy shell.

Last, the halloumi taco. A good option for vegetarians but I would give it a miss. The halloumi was small, lacklustre, and needed a better combination of ingredients.

My thoughts? The fish and beef tacos are surprisingly good and worth ordering.

Churros

When I think of a churro, I think of a lightly fried dough stick that is crunchy in the centre. Unfortunately, these churros fell short of my expectation with its doughy centre.

These churros come with a hot chocolate dipping sauce, which make them a fun shared dish if you enjoy a slightly different texture.

However, I would give these a miss if you're after a traditional Mexican churro.

RECOMMENDED

  • Exploring the extensive range of craft beers and cocktails
  • Fish Taco & Beef Bulgogi Taco
  • Trying the more intriguing dishes on the menu

Final Thoughts

While not typically my cup of tea, I can see why The Botany View Hotel is an ideal spot for locals seeking a relaxed pub experience.

The whole building has plenty of seating while the stage serves up great live music. Each area of the venue provides a different atmosphere to suit all types.

The food options are varied enough to cater for a range of tastes, as such you can expect to pay a fair price for your meal. However, I'd likely give the churros a miss and opt for something else if you're after dessert.
