Fried Chicken Wings

TL; DR | Summary

If you love your KFC, you'll quickly love Butter's fried chicken. This dish is made with succulent chicken coated in a crispy batter and then fried to perfection. The result is a juicy, flavourful chicken that will leave you in a in a delicious haven. But! Buyer beware. The pricing is Sydney steep! At $13.50 for 2 tenders and 1 thigh, you better skip the avocado toast for breakfast and put your dollars towards your chicken dinner.

Fried Chicken With Fusion Food & Service

When you first visit Butter, you might wonder if you're in the correct spot. The restaurant front has a wall of sneakers on display and looks more like a cool sneaker shop than a restaurant. That's because Butter is more than just your local chicken joint, it's also a retail shop.

This restaurant retail hybrid has character with its vibrant displays, creating the perfect vibe for chilling with a chicken wing. The seating area is small, so it can get quite busy during peak hours, so I recommend getting in early before the lunch and dinner rush.

Service is quick as it's primarily about fried chicken, with an exciting selection of sides, including poutine, Asian greens, and miso corny. The food is generally of excellent quality, and the service is fast, making it a great place to grab a quick feed.

The Butter Surry Hills menu is limited, with the fried chicken the main star of the restaurant and with good reason. The chicken is cooked well and satisfies any and all cravings. Tender, juicy, and flavourful, like a good RnB song. Additionally, the coating in a crispy batter adds the ideal crispness to every bite. It's just the price that's a downer.

Size 3 Fried Chicken Wings

The fried chicken wings are the best item on the menu and beats KFC by a long shot. It's three BIG pieces of succulent chicken wings covered in a crispy batter.

The skin is not greasy, and the meat is cooked to juicy perfection. Appearance alone should paint a picture of how good this dish is. This is a must-have when you come to Butter!

Fun Fact!

Butter is ranked #5 in my Best Chicken Restaurants in Sydney list. Find out which restaurant ranked #1.

3 Pac Tenders

I rarely see chicken tenders that aren't overcooked. Unfortunately, this is no exception. The batter has good seasoning, but the tenders inside are too dry, and I would generally give this a miss.

Tenders are usually a good option for those wanting to skip the bone-in option, but I would still recommend getting the wings over the tenders. But if you must, enjoy a kick and pair it with their complimentary hot sauce (dine-in only)!

Master Spice Burger

Fried chicken thigh, spicy mayo, pickles, double cheese, and fire hot sauce.

Since the chicken at this restaurant is prepared to such a high standard, it's a pretty safe bet that the fried chicken burger will be great.

The Master Spice Sandwich's crispy chicken patty did not disappoint. While simple, the burger is incredibly flavourful and definitely hits the spot.

Note, all burgers/sandwiches are served with a side of fries, so you're sure to leave satisfied.

Miso Corny

First off, "Miso Corny" is an A+ name for a side. However, as a corn lover, this was a pure disappointment.

The corn wasn't cooked thoroughly and lacked any form of miso, as per its name. It was essentially just steamed corn. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this side.

Ramen & Dessert Specials

These items are not on their usual menu but are available as a special.

The ramen is pretty standard and comes with their fried chicken tenders, noodles, egg, enoki mushroom, rice cake, seaweed, and green onions. For a restaurant that doesn't specialise in ramen or traditional Japanese food, it's pretty decent.

However, I'll be honest, I see this listed on the top ramen lists by other websites, and I'm afraid I have to disagree with these websites. It was a good bowl of ramen, but it wasn't anything special to make me return for it again.

The Valrhona Slice, on the other hand, is a beautiful and decadent dessert. It's a velvety chocolate cake made from one of the top chocolate brands you'll come across in the world. If you see this back on their menu, I recommend trying it!

RECOMMENDED

  • Fried chicken wings
  • Anything with their chicken thigh e.g. burger or on its own
  • Adding complimentary hot sauce

Last Thoughts

Butter is the place to go if you're looking for good-quality fried chicken that's a big step up from KFC. The only aspect holding it back is the price, as it can be pretty steep for what you get. But if you're willing to splurge some, give Butter's fried chicken a try!
