TL; DR | Summary
Devon Café offers a delightful blend of Japanese-influenced dishes in a modern café setting. I’ve been a long-time fan since their early days in Surry Hills, I can attest that they’ve continued to thrive and remain at the forefront of creative café cuisine. With high-quality ingredients, expect to pay a premium but be rewarded with some stellar dishes. While not every item is a standout, the rotating menu and must-try desserts keep things interesting for repeat visits.
Devon Cafe Barangaroo Review
Having been a fan since their early days in Surry Hills, Devon Café holds a special place in my heart. Now also located in Barangaroo, this spot makes it to my top 5 cafés in Sydney for good reason. For starters, the restaurant's ambiance is modern and inviting, making it perfect for a relaxed brunch or casual lunch. However, brace yourself for a higher price point as they use top-notch ingredients (like Hunter Valley free range eggs), but you can expect a meal that mostly justifies the cost.
The Devon Cafe Barangaroo menu is an ever-changing treat, with dishes catered to the season. You’ll find typical café breakfast items, intriguing starter bites, and hearty mains like noodles, pasta, and rice dishes with a Japanese flair. They cater well to vegetarians, as well as those that are dairy-free and gluten-free. While not every dish will be a knockout, you can definitely count on finding some real gems. I haven’t had their desserts yet but will make sure to indulge in them on my next visit.
Devon Cafe Barangaroo Menu & Service
The food and service at Devon Café are generally good. The cafe is popular so it's generally quite busy. I would recommend making a booking so you don't miss out on a table.
As with most busy cafes, the staff can be slow to take your order, a delay I've experienced twice. But other than that, the dining experience is smooth and enjoyable.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics of the dishes I’ve tried:
Omurice
This dish features garlic tomato koshihikari rice topped with scrambled egg, mushroom demi-glace, and wagyu beef. It's a comforting, flavour-packed meal that hits all the right notes. If you’re feeling up for a warm curry rice dish, this is it.
Chicken Katsu Sando
A classic Japanese sandwich with crispy chicken katsu, kimchi mayo, and gochujang cabbage. The mix of textures and flavours is simple yet highly delicious. It’s perfect for those opting for fried chicken with an Asian twist.
Spicy Mentai Salmon Bowl
This delightful bowl is a flavour explosion with king salmon cooked aburi, cod roe mayo, chives, salmon caviar, koshihikari rice, and seasoned nori. Each bite is a delightful blend of spicy, creamy, and umami notes, and is a dish I’d recommend!
The OG
If you’re not feeling adventurous, then a classic café breakfast with scrambled eggs, pecorino, sausage, hash brown, cherry tomatoes, sourdough toast, and bacon is the way to go. It's hearty and satisfying, perfect for a leisurely brunch with all of your familiar brekkie items.

Final Words
Devon Café at Barangaroo is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a quality café with a Japanese twist. While the prices are on the higher side, the unique and well executed dishes make it worth every penny, most of the time. Whether you're a long-time fan like me or a first-time visitor, you're in for a treat at Devon Café. Don't forget to leave room for dessert and, if you're up for a big indulgent treat, try the starter bites too!
