El Camino Miranda Review

If you’re craving Tex-Mex, El Camino Cantina is one of the more well-known options in Sydney.

Known for its loud atmosphere, flavoured margaritas, and colourful décor, it’s a spot that promises a fun night out. But is it worth the price?

We tried every single taco on the menu plus a good selection of cocktails. Here’s my honest review.

Location & Atmosphere

El Camino Cantina has multiple locations across Sydney, including The Rocks, Entertainment Quarter, Manly Wharf, and Westfield Miranda. We visited the Miranda location, though I’ve also been to the Entertainment Quarter one before.

If you’re heading to El Camino Miranda, be aware that Westfield Miranda (or as the locals call it, “Miranda Fair”) can be a bit of a maze.

The restaurant is in the Rooftop Dining area, so the best parking is on the rooftop level. Enter via the Kingsway speed ramp or Wandella Road speed ramp for the easiest access.

We visited on a Tuesday night, and the restaurant was pretty quiet – only about five other tables were occupied.

It’s a good spot for a casual night out with friends and it’s right next to the cinema, so it’s a great pre-movie dinner option.

The Mexican-themed décor adds to the experience and the music playlist was a highlight, especially if you’re a millennial. Whoever picked the songs did a great job. Here's a taste of what we listened to.

Ordering & Pricing

You can order online via QR code or order at the bar. If you want to save a few dollars, order at the bar – there are extra surcharges (a daily surcharge and card surcharge) for using the QR code.

Price-wise, El Camino Cantina Miranda isn’t the cheapest Mexican food in Sydney, but it’s also not too expensive.

Drinks

Drinks came out quickly, but it was a quiet night. Based on past visits, service seems fast even when it’s busy.

One small gripe I have with the drinks is they are on the expensive side. Two cocktails will set you back almost $50, which can add up. It would have been nice to see a few more cheaper drink options or a special on a bucket of Coronas.

The Money Maker

Patron Silver, Coffee Liqueur, Frangelico, Cold-Drip Coffee

A tequila version of an espresso martini. Strong, slightly bitter, and definitely boozy. If you lack all good regard, you could drink quite a few and be annoyingly drunk. So, try and limit it to maybe one?

The Blue Dream

Bacardi Coconut Rum, Blue Curacao, Pineapple, Lime

Very sweet and tangy – almost too sweet to drink on its own, but good with food. It’s served in a standard glass, so it doesn’t feel like a premium cocktail despite the $24 price tag.

Classic Margarita

A solid margarita with a generous salt rim. Well-balanced between sweet and salty, it’s a real delight. Highly recommend.

4 Pines Pale Ale (On Tap)

Shoutout to 4 Pines, a famous beer made right here in Manly, Sydney. It’s served in a chalice-style glass (probably a schooner, but hard to tell) and as tap pale ale goes, it’s as good as it gets. I’d choose this over a bottled Corona any day.

Mandarin Jarritos

A pretty standard non-alcoholic soft drink available at most Mexican restaurants. I’d love to see a bit more variety in the non-alcoholic section, like a horchata.

Tacos

The tacos are $8 each or you can get three for $23.

For me, three tacos aren’t enough – four is the sweet spot.

We made it our mission to try every taco listed on the menu, plus the Taco Twist Tuesday special (a rotating weekly flavour). I liked about two-thirds of them. The rest? Not for me.

One great thing – if you hate coriander, you can remove it when ordering via the QR code.

Frank Taco

Tempura Barramundi, Corn & Tomato Salsa, Habanero Mango Sauce, Coriander

I’m not a huge fan of fish, but even I thought this was good. The deep fry helps. It wasn’t too hot with the habanero sauce; it’s more mango than heat.

Dirty Sanchez

BBQ Pulled Pork, Onion, Pickles, Cabbage Slaw, Coriander

There are two pulled pork tacos on the menu, and this is the superior one of the two. Hot and sweet. If you like that BBQ sauce sweetness, it’s a top choice.

King Caesar

Grilled Chicken, Shredded Iceberg, Bacon Crisps, Shaved Parmesan, Caesar Dressing

Chicken Caesar is a classic flavour. You almost can’t go wrong and this one hit the spot.

The Winger

Popcorn Chicken, Shredded Iceberg, Pico De Gallo, Spicy Chilli Mayo

Highly recommend! The popcorn chicken and spicy chilli mayo combo is a winner. I mean, who doesn’t love popcorn chicken? Someone crazy, that’s who.

El Mac

Ground Beef Mince, Shredded Iceberg, Cheddar, Pickles, Onion, Special Sauce

This is basically a burger in taco form. The special sauce is the star here. Slightly spicy, but not too hot. It’s phenomenal. One of the best tacos of the night.

Philly Mex

Sauteed Steak, Onion & Capsicum, Cheddar Cheese, Habanero Tamarind Sauce, Coriander

I wasn’t a fan of this taco. It was like eating a steak with some overly sweet sauce, like some heathen. The onion and tamarind sauce didn’t compliment the flavours well and despite the three-chilli spice rating, it wasn’t spicy at all.

Cowboy

BBQ Beef Brisket, Cabbage Slaw, Coriander

I didn’t like this taco at all. The beef brisket had way too much BBQ sauce and the slaw was almost non-existent.

Papa Pastor

Al Pastor Pulled-Pork, Pineapple And Jalapeno Salsa, Coriander

I found this too heavy on the shredded pork, although the pineapple in the salsa did give it a slight tang. I think it needs more balancing in the ratio of ingredients. I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a pulled pork fetish.

The Cauli Cartel

Roast Cauliflower, Guacamole, Corn & Tomato Salsa, Green Habanero Sauce, Coriander

Spicy, but delicious, especially for a vegetarian option. The green habanero sauce was hot, but equally tasty. Would recommend.

Taco Twist Tuesday (Pork)

This was amazing! Tangy, caramelised pork with a slightly bitter aftertaste. I’d order again if available.

Dessert

Banana Fritters

Southern Style Dough, Fried Banana, Butterscotch & Sweet Cream Sauce

While it took 25 minutes to arrive, it did come out steaming hot. I found the sauce too sweet and needed some ice cream to balance it out. At $16, it’s overpriced, and I wouldn’t recommend.

Final Words

El Camino Cantina Miranda is a fun spot for a night out, especially before a movie. The tacos are hit or miss, but when they’re good, they’re great.

Drinks are expensive, but service is fast.

Would I come back? Yes, but I’d be careful about which tacos I order and limit it to two cocktails.
