Does this spot match the hype?

TL; DR | Summary
Experience authentic Vietnamese food at Hai Au Lang Nuong in Sydney's southwest. Whether you're looking to satisfy a light craving or ready for a feast, there's an extensive selection of delicious foods prepared using conventional grilling methods.
Hai Au Lang Nuong Review
Hai Au Lang Nuong in Canley Vale is a corner place with bright green neon lights and a strong BBQ hit. You might not have realised it at first sign, but it's a massive two-storey restaurant with a robust cultural feel.
It's possible to hold a small wedding here with its vast open space and indulgent cuisine.
Rickshaws, Vietnamese hats, shelves of Hennessey bottles, Buddha, and a life-sized ox; you can tell that the owners decorated this place with pride for their culture.
It's all about Vietnamese BBQ and bringing authenticity throughout. A wide range of meats, seafood and veggies are on offer, all prepared in traditional grilling methods and prepped with classic Vietnamese ingredients.
Food & Service
With three extensive menus for lunch, dinner and specials, there's a vast selection to accompany any Vietnamese cravings.
Bring your family and friends because there are lots to share here, and you'll find some unique and authentic food never encountered before. I recommend keeping an open mind as you might discover unconventional dishes you like.
I also recommend multiple visits to experience the vast menu. There are Vietnamese food you probably haven't heard of, so it'll be quite the experience.
The service is quick and efficient with the food still sizzling when it arrives at your table.
It can get a little hectic during peak hours, but the staff are always happy to help when they can.
As English isn't the main language of the staff, you may experience some language barriers. However, there's nothing a little patience and understanding can't fix.
Interior
The interior decor features CDs, Christmas lights, and origami, creating a unique yet comforting dining environment.
There's also an ox statue, Vietnamese hats, and a rickshaw to add extra appearl to the restaurant.
It's easy to look around and take everything in. Take note of the hanging microphones the staff use for communication.
Most of this is located upstairs, so do pop up and check it out.
Hai Au Lang Nuong Menu
The lunch menu features pho, fried rice, crispy chicken, curry, pork chops and more traditional Vietnamese dishes you've likely not come across.
The dinner menu features all the large dishes, including clay pot, steamboats, and whole fish. There's also entrees, sides, and everything in between.
The regular menu features your Vietnamese BBQ favourites, such as chicken, beef, pork and fish. There are plenty of seafood options, too, such as prawns, pipis and crab.
Bo Tai Chanh
Bo Tai Chanh is a rare beef salad, served with lime juice and prawn crackers. We chose the Beef in Tamarind Salad variation.
The beef was marinated thoroughly and paired well with the tamarind salad, bringing a tangy and tart flavour into the mix. It's the perfect entree to start the meal.
Tom Kho Tau
Tom Kho Tau is a sauteed prawn dish served with an Asian sauce. This restaurant's take is a stewed scampi in a signature Hai Au sauce.
At $12 a piece, it is a bit pricey but it comes with the most flavourful sauce that packs a savoury and creamy punch. The scampi is cooked well and complemented the sauce perfectly.
This is a great dish to eat on a bed of rice if you're looking for something hearty and delicious.
Steamed Silver Perch with Ginger & Shallots
If you like your fish based in soy sauce with a kick of ginger, this is the dish for you.
The fish skin was tender and the flesh effortlessly fell of the bone. It's a reasonably common fish dish that can be found in most Vietnamese restaurants, but this one is better than most.
Signature Spring Rolls
The signature spring rolls include four rolls per serve and they are some of the better spring rolls I've tasted in Sydney.
The skin was crispy and flaky and not too oily. Packed with the right combination of meat and vegetables, it's an excellent starter to share.
The nuoc mam dipping sauce was a great addition and match the taste of the spring rolls.
Bo La Lop Nuong Than
Bo La Lop Nuong Than is a marinated beef mince that is skillfully wrapped with fresh betel leaf.
It's a first for me to see this dish in a restaurant. It is an interesting take on the traditional street food and the beef mince was well seasoned wtih a hint of charcoal notes.
The betel leaf madded a unique flavour and aroma, making it an enjoyable experience. If you're feeling a tad adventurous, give these skewers a try!
Hai Au BBQ Chicken
The menu claims this is the best BBQ chicken so there was a high standard set from the start. Unfortunately, it did not deliver.
The BBQ chicken was tender but it lacked any exciting elements to keep you coming back for more.
