Ken’s Sushi Bar Dining Review

Ken's Sushi Bar is a testament to what true passion and mastery can bring, with a skilful yet humble chef at the helm. It's said that a restaurant's soul is in its chef, and Ken's dedication to his craft is tangible in every bite. It's clear that much love is put into the food, and it's not just limited to the sushi. In addition, I can attest that the gyoza, in particular, is worth ordering on every visit.

Growing up, I knew about Ken's Sushi's underrated popularity as one of its charms. This often draws a steady stream of diners who've heard of its legendary sushi through word of mouth. But despite this reputable allure, Ken's Sushi offers a casual atmosphere and spacious environment without the discomfort of crowded eateries. It's the perfect setting for authentic Japanese sushi crafted by the humble yet highly experienced chef.

A local sushi gem south of Sydney

Ken's Sushi doesn't seem to be on any of the food delivery apps, so if you want to experience it for yourself, you'll be dining in. But don't worry, the restaurant is conveniently located in very close proximity of the Bexley North train station, making it easily accessible by train. There's also a spacious parking lot and street parking available, ensuring easy parking for those driving.

Fun Fact!

Ken's Sushi is ranked #7 in my Best Sushi Restaurants in Sydney list. Find out which restaurant ranked #1.

Ken's Sushi Menu

Ken's embodies a diverse menu that goes beyond just sushi and nigiri. For seafood enthusiasts, offerings like soft shell crab are a treat, and for those who lean towards meat, options span from chicken to wagyu beef and barramundi.

Ken's sushi bar dining menu also boasts a range of classic Japanese dishes, consisting of agadashi tofu, takoyaki, gyoza, tempura, nanban, katsu, teriyaki, and udon/soba noodles. Unfortunately, there aren't dessert options, and the drink selections are also limited. All in all, the menu caters well to those craving an authentic Japanese meal, their specialty.

The fish cuts at this restaurant are notably on the generous side. At a glance, the nigiri pieces presents elongated cuts of fish, while the sashimi slices are thicker than most. This is all the while showcasing the fish's evident freshness. In terms of cost, it's on the upper end, with a single piece of standard fish nigiri priced between $4 and $5.50. In addition, a set of five sashimi pieces comes in at $19.80.

Classic quality sushi at this local hot spot

You can expect nothing less than proficiency in all the Japanese classics. Specifically, the freshness in the sushi and sashimi is an understatement here, with every piece being a testament to quality. The rice, seasoned to perfection, complements the freshness of the fish, creating a balance that's hard to come by these days. The experience of eating sushi at Ken's is akin to a symphony – every element, from the wasabi's kick to the soy sauce's umami, plays its part to perfection.

Service is fast, ensuring that any diner doesn't have to wait long for their food to arrive. Whether you're in for a quick bite or a leisurely get-together, Ken's Sushi strikes the ideal balance, offering rapid service without compromising on the quality of the dining experience. There is nothing to fault on service here as it's what you'd typically expect at any traditional Japanese restaurant.

Pork Gyoza

Crispy skin pork gyoza with dipping sauce.

Here, you'll find mouth-watering top-tier gyozas that are practically the gold standard. Ken's take on this Japanese classic is unmatched with perfectly crisp gyozas that hold the juicy, succulent pork that's been well-seasoned. Then, with the accompanying tangy dipping sauce, you're in for a mouthful of complete satisfaction. Each bite offers a delightful punch of flavour, with a bit of crunch for an all-encompassing textural sensation. I can also confirm they're still great when having them take-away.

Maxima Sushi & Sashimi Combination

California sushi roll with fish roe, kingfish & cucumber sushi, salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, kingfish nigiri, prawn nigiri, scallop nigiri, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, kingfish sashimi.

Opt for their combination sushi and sashimi sets if you're after variety and quality. It'll be a platter showcasing the classic cuts of fish that we all know and love in various sushi forms. I don't recommend it if you only like one to two kinds of fish or are not a fan of kingfish, prawns and scallops. But otherwise, each piece is designed to be savoured, with its unique textures and freshness.

RECOMMENDED

  • Gyoza
  • Your favourite fish cuts, e.g., Salmon, tuna
  • Selecting from the Futomaki or the extensive inside-out sushi roll section on the menu

Final Words

In today's world, where flashy trends often overshadow authenticity, Ken's Sushi rises above with his genuine craftsmanship. For the authentic classic Japanese sushi dining experience, travel to Bexley and indulge yourself in this timeless classic beloved by many visitors from afar. Also, Ken sets the bar high for those on a quest to find the best gyozas.
