Oysters With Ponzu, Yuzu & Miso Vinaigrette

TL; DR | Summary

Undoubtedly, the best Japanese BBQ in Sydney goes to Nishiki Wagyu Yakiniku. Feast on a fine selection of wagyu beef, sashimi and plenty of Japanese staples, including matcha and black sesame ice cream. I recommend the $75pp buffet option so you can try a bit of everything. Plus, you get a complimentary plate of oysters, which no other JBBQ does!

As soon as you step foot into Nishiki, the Japanese staff greet you with a warm welcome and lead you to a cosy dining space.

This traditional Japanese restaurant has a modern feel to it with light wooden interiors and handing lights with a view of the quality wagyu meats on offer.

The buffet is my top recommendation as the high quality meats will not disappoint. The meats exceed all expectations for buffet standards, and you have an exciting range to choose from, including wagyu beef, sashimi, chicken thigh, and other traditional Japanese BBQ dishes.

Compared to other big JBBQ establishments, the menu is a bit smaller, but don't let that stop you from visiting. The quality and service make up for the smaller menu.

Nishiki is an underrated hidden gem and definitely the top Japanese BBQ restaurant in Sydney.

The Service At Nishiki

The service is attentive and efficient, with your food arriving promptly and accurately after your order is placed.

You order through your phone using the restaurant's QR code system and the food is brought out to you, freshly made to order.

Note that there are only two large tables. There's smaller seating across the restaurant for a cosy atmosphere. The tables for 4 are separated by a small wall, so it feels more separate should you have have 8 people dining.

The ambience in the restaurant is lovely. There's a good vibe with light background music.

The Food At Nishiki

In addition to their Japanese BBQ buffet menu, Nishiki offers an a la carte menu. The a la carte option features a variety of high-quality wagyu cuts, pork toro, chicken, seafood, and duck. You can also dine on shabu shabu, rice, noodles, sushi, and sashimi.

Not only is the entire menu full of delicious dishes, the sides are top notch too. Fill in the gaps with karaage chicken, chicken wings, kimchi, and dumplings for variety. The sides are solid choices and provide a nice break from the meat sweats.

Oysters

Start off your Japanese BBQ buffet experience with their complimentary oysters.

You're given the choice to have them with either ponzu, miso, or yuzu vinaigrette. All are excellent options.

The ponzu is refreshing with a hint of tartness, the miso gives it an umami depth of flavour, and the yuzu gives it a lovely citrusy finish.

My favourite was the yuzu but all are delightful choices.

Sashimi

The sashimi at Nishiki is freshly prepared and cut into thick pieces, a tell-tale sign of quality and freshness.

The wagyu cuts were tender and marbled to perfection. The uniform pieces melt in your mouth and are a pleasure on the senses. You can't go wrong with the meat at Nishiki.

Could there be a downside? Unfortunately, yes. There's no tuna sashimi.

Nevertheless, the salmon and kingfish will satisfy your raw sashimi cravings.

Wagyu Yukke

The wagyu yukke is a marinated piece of wagyu served in a cup with a raw egg, topped with caviar. It's the definition of luxury.

The wagyu is incredibly tender (as expected) and the egg gives a lovely creamy texture. The caviar adds an umami pop, and the cold dish is refreshing.

Tsubozuke

The tsubozuke (special yakiniku pot) is the only miss on the menu. It tasted a bit odd for my palette. I'm unsure how the marinade was meant to taste, but I didn't find it pleasant.

Whilst the presentation was beautiful, the taste missed the mark.

Dessert

If you enjoy classic Japanese flavours, don't skip the matcha and black sesame ice creams. You'll want to order multiple servings!

To cap off your meal, there's also mochi and fruit. If you had the buffet, be prepared and wear some stretchy clothing as you'll be quite full by the end!
