No 1 Malatang is a Sydney institution amongst noodle lovers. Once you experience the consistently exceptional food and service, I guarantee you'll become a repeat customer.

The base broths have flavour and depth, and that much needed umami is present in every dish.

The service is always fast, I've never seen a place so efficient at managing a full restaurant worth of orders.

Like most Malatang restaurants, it's a DIY experience. Find a table, pick your ingredients, pay at the counter, and grab your utensils.

There are many reasons why people consider this the best Malatang in Sydney. Their broth and ingredient selection impresses, with over 100 options to choose from. You'll truly get a customised bowl of noodles here.

Personally, I like a different Malatang establishment because of their broth, but, I would never say no to No. 1 Malatang in Burwood.

The quality and service at the Burwood location is above and beyond compared to it's other locations, particularly the ones in the shopping centre food courts. So ideally, make the trek to Burwood, as you'll likely be disappointed if you go elsewhere.

Delicious Noodles Worth Fighting Over

If you've never been to a Malatang restaurant before, think of it like a conveyer belt of creating your bowl and waiting for your buzzer to go off. It's efficient and effective.

However, be wary if you go during peak hour, for both lunch and dinner, as the line can get extremely long, with tables packed with diners.

Never fret, the service is always on point, and the staff quickly take your order and process your payment. You'll usually receive your meal in 10 minutes or less. The main issue you'll face is finding a table before your order is ready.

As for the No 1 Malatang menu, there's almost too much choice! There's plenty of meat, seafood, greens, mushrooms, noodles, and other favourites such as the fish roe ball, and even frozen oysters!

Fun Fact!

No.1 Malatang is ranked #3 in my Best Malatang in Sydney list. Find out which restaurant ranked #1.

Ingredient selection

A few downsides regarding ingredients are that they don't have handmade noodles, and many items remain unnamed, so you're going mainly by your intuition of what looks good. On the flip side, there are over 100 ingredients, with quite a few exciting seafood and meaty options, so you can discover something new every time.

Pricing

Their pricing is a little cheeky as they charge per 100g (most Malatang restaurants usually charge per 500g), with the cheapest being $3.40 per 100g, that's $17 for 500g, which can be seen as the steeper price for Malatang. However, there appears to be a no minimum spend, which is ideal for those who have tiny appetites or are just after a small feed.

Soup Selection

As for their soup bases, they've expanded to seven choices:

  • Classic Spicy Ox Bone Soup
  • Ox Bone Soup
  • Laksa Soup
  • Chicken Soup (this base costs a bit more)
  • Dry Stir Mix
  • Tomato Ox Bone Soup
  • Mushroom Ox Bone Soup

While the tomato and mushroom broths have the vegetarian symbol on them, if the naming is correct, the ox bone is clearly not vegetarian. So I'm questioning whether their base is actually ox bone or whether it's just a marketing ploy to make the naming sound catchy.

Classic Spicy Ox Bone Soup

For any chilli fans, this fiery Sichuan-style soup is a must. It has an adjustable level of spiciness to give you the right kick and the perfect numbing sensation so the chilli isn't overbearing. Don't mind my spicy Malatang photos, as I love chilli despite the impending regret.

Chicken Soup

The chicken soup is perfect for those who want a homely, comforting bowl of noodle soup packed full of chicken flavour. While it does cost a bit more than the other broths, it is a very high quality chicken soup base. It showcases it's depth of flavour compared to other restaurants where the broth is cloudy.

Ox Bone Soup

Ox bone isn't a commonly found soup base in Malatang restaurants, which sets this apart from the competition. It's clear and beefy that's not too intense in flavour.

It's a nice break from the traditional Sichuan-style broths and worth trying if you're looking for something different.

RECOMMENDED

  • Classic Spicy Ox Bone Soup
  • Ox Bone Soup
  • Chicken Soup
  • Trying different ingredients

Final Words

No. 1 Malatang in Burwood is a great option for Malatang lovers. The variety of over 100 ingredients, seven soup bases, and the fast service makes this spot well worth a visit.

The pricing can be steeper compared to other Malatang restaurants, but there is no minimum weight requirement as far as I can tell.

The Burwood location will likely be busy during lunch and dinner but it's also the best location out of the many franchises in terms of service. So, if you're keen for a soup noodle feed, you can't go wrong with Burwood's No.1 Malatang!
