Picco_leo Review

Tucked away in the laneway charm of Angel Place near Wynyard, Picco_leo (or Picco Leo) is the kind of bakery you almost walk right past – but you absolutely shouldn't.

It's a pastry haven open only on weekdays for city workers and baked goods lovers.

Suppose you're lucky enough to work nearby or can sneak in a cheeky detour. In that case, this place defines Sydney's refined bakery experience.

The atmosphere is classy yet laid-back, with outdoor seating for coffee and pastries.

It's not one of those over-the-top, all-the-things-on-the-menu bakeries, and that's precisely the charm.

The menu isn't huge, but what they do they do extremely well, and everything is baked fresh each morning. However, do note that Picco is only open on weekdays.

Expect a polished line-up of tarts, croissants, friands, cheese logs and pies, all beautifully displayed under glass cloches that make choosing even harder.

I've returned a few times, and every visit has been memorable as these pastries stood out.

See these custard tarts or Portuguese tarts here? Oh, my goodness, they're in a league of their own. Just look at them!

Picco Leo Menu

The pastry game here is strong — think buttery, crisp, and golden.

The staff are lovely and approachable, and the display of baked goods feels more like an elegant boutique than your average busy bakery.

Everything I tried tasted like it was made with delicate care. There's much thought behind each item, and it's about nailing every element.

Classic Croissant

You can't go wrong with the classics. These croissants are golden, flaky, and so airy that they practically shatter with each bite. They are all about that crisp exterior and beautifully layered centre, and they have that perfect balance of buttery richness without feeling greasy.

Potato and Leek Pie

This is one for the savoury lovers. For a pie, it's extra crisp with the many visible layers. Then inside, you'll find a savoury filling topped with sesame seeds for a nutty crunch. I love that first bite when biting through the layers to reveal the tender potato and leek pieces.

Baked Financier

This is a small almondy treat that's moist and not overly sweet. It's your go-to if you want a little sweet something without committing to a full dessert or baked good.

Signature Custard Tart

You'll find this only at Picco_leo. It's rectangular, loaded with custard and wrapped in incredibly flaky pastry. Decadent without being too sweet, I could eat this every weekend and never tire of it.

Berry Custard Tart

This one's topped with fresh blueberries, strawberries, and a sprinkle of pistachios. The creamy filling meets fruity tang in the best way, all resting in a crunchy tart shell. They're generous with the fruit, which I like.

Cheese Log

This is no ordinary cheese pastry, as you can tell by its appearance. It's a golden, crusty log layered with cheese and fragrant rosemary. Like other pastries, you can expect some flaking apart with every bite. A real standout for something simple and savoury.

Garlic Bread Slice

Crunchy, garlicky, cheesy – this thick-cut slice is made for sharing, though I'd completely understand if you didn't want to. I'd like it to be more garlicky, but that's just me being addicted.

RECOMMENDED

  • Must-try: The Signature Custard Tart and Berry Custard Tart
  • Visit mid-morning to get the freshest pick
  • Grab a coffee and enjoy the outdoor seating if you've got time

Final Words

Picco Leo is everything I love in a bakery. It's got a touch of style, a lot of substance in its baked goods, and the kind of place you instantly want to return to.

The custard tarts alone have made me a repeat visitor. It's a casual place to swing by, yet it feels special enough to savour everything you purchased.

The flipside is that it doesn’t open on weekends, so only ideal for if you work or are visiting the city during the week.

What’s your go-to bakery? I'd also love to hear what your favourite pastry is.
