Pricing

Although the set menu price of $75 is quite reasonable, the add-ons can quickly drive up the price towards $100. However, I do think the additional cost is justifiable considering the quality of the food on offer.

I would personally spend this amount at Senpai Ramen because visiting a fine dining restaurant in Sydney can easily cost twice the price.

The food at Senpai Ramen

Once you get past the neon lights and the funky atmosphere, you'll see that the star of the show is really the food.

Sashimi:

Start off Ramen Senpai's omakase experience with some fresh sashimi. Presented beautifully, you can hardly go wrong with the trio combination of salmon, tuna and snapper/kingfish. The sashimi selection may change depending on when you visit, but no matter what you're presented, you're definitely in for a treat.

Chawanmushi:

Even if you're not an egg custard enthusiast, you'll definitely enjoy Senpai Ramen's chawanmushi.

It has a smooth velvety texture with a light savoury flavour. It's the perfect cleanse and introductory dish before you hit the heavier and more robust flavours to come.

Wagyu:

As expected, the high-quality wagu is tender and melts in your mouth as you devour your piece. It's cooked to perfection with a slight sear on the outside and a juicy pink centre.

Glacier 51 (or San Choy Bau equivalent):

The best kind of lettuce wrap is packed with flavour with just the right balance of freshness. I had the marinated Glacier 51 toothfish, but regardless of the filling, you're guaranteed to experience that in this handful of umami bliss.

Senpai Ramen's Kaisen Kobachi (add on):

You absolutely MUST get this add-on. If salmon, tuna, and seared scallop sound enticing to you, this will be your dream combo. The fish was incredibly fresh, seared just how you would like it, with components that bring it all together.

Senpai Ramen's Chicken Wing Gyoza (optional):

The chicken wings are a phenomenal add-on! If you're not a clean bone eater, that'll definitely change as you'll come to love the crispy chicken skin and tender, juicy meat. The perfect ratio of meat to skin, with a yuzu kosho sauce to enhance the flavours. I could very easily go for an entire plate of these bad boys.

Ramen:

My favourite food is ramen, so I'll be honest, I'm a ramen snob. My top ramen picks are still Gumshara, Chaco Ramen, and Ryo's noodles. So, the ramen here doesn't quite compete with the best of the best. But to be fair, those are specialty ramen eateries.

Despite this, I still had two servings of Senpai's ramen on top of the set menu.

The ramen broth is constructed well with a good amount of umami and depth in flavour. The noodles are cooked to al-dente perfection and the meat, whether chashu or duck, is moist and flavourful. It is on the smaller side, so I recommend getting other dishes if you're here for a la carte.

Abalone add-on:

The abalone is an add-on you can skip. I found the raw-like and chewiness of the abalone didn't complement the ramen well and didn't add anything extra.

Dessert (changes seasonally):

A well-thought-out dessert with a good mixture of textures keeps you entertained while trying to understand how each component unfolds. I enjoyed the fruit compote and the ice cream as it wasn't too sweet, while the other elements elevated the dessert. You'll be left more than content with your dining experience.
