TL; DR | Summary

Located at an old-fashioned house from the inner suburbs, Sixpenny deviates from the typical CBD-based three-hatted restaurants with its warm and cosy ambience. The menu is adaptable to various dietary requirements, though this does slow down the service. Perfect for a special occasion, Sixpenny presents a chance to indulge in beautifully presented innovative dishes.

A visit to Sixpenny is a must for an once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. This unique restaurant, set in a converted house, warmly emits a cosy charm. Its interior blends comfort and elegance, enhanced by ambient and natural lighting streaming through the windows and accompanied by a central bar. The extensive drink selection, from wine pairings and aperitifs to cocktails, cider, sake, vermouth, and house mixes, complements the wonderfully appetising set menu.

We visited for a birthday occasion, and it was an unforgettable experience, with beautifully presented dishes and enjoyable ingredient combinations. While the service may be slower as they customise their menu for customers with dietary needs, the overall experience was impressive, and you'll leave with a smile. Every dish served was a masterpiece, carefully crafted and transforming our meal at Sixpenny into an enchanting culinary adventure that I highly recommend visiting yourself.

Pricing-wise, expect to pay $250 per person for your set course, with the additional cost of any drinks you order. It's safe to say that I think the experience definitely justifies the cost.

A birthday to remember at Sixpenny Sydney

During our birthday celebration, the food was exceptional. Be prepared for a lengthy dining adventure, as the entire experience can span 3 to 4 hours with some pauses between courses. For this reason, I recommend exploring their extensive drinks menu, which includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to suit all preferences. The presentation of each dish is a feast for the eyes (as you'll see in the Sixpenny photos to come), and the detailed explanation provided for each course adds depth to the dining experience, making it visually stunning and educational.

Sixpenny's Rhubarb & Rosella Soda

This soda is an in-house crafted beverage and serves as a great palate cleanser or a standalone delight. It's a drink with a gentle balance of sweet and tart while remaining refreshing and light.

Plum and Lemon Shrub Soda

Unique to Sixpenny, this beverage was an enjoyable refresher worth trying. It's a mix of natural plum, lemon and other little nuances that create a sweet and sour sparkling soda.

Sydney Rock Oysters with Red Onion and Tomato Vinaigrette

The red onion and tomato vinaigrette enhance an invigorated start to the fine dining experience. One slurp and you'll find your tastebuds enveloped by this blend of tangy and fresh flavours.

Spring Pea Tart with Whipped Goat's Curd

A visually appealing dish at first glance. It's a refreshing burst of spring green on a tart, with the lightness of the peas complemented by the creamy curd. This, combined with the crunch of the wafer-thin tart, creates a pleasant feel in each mouthful.

Kangaroo Taco Tartare with Caramelised Cream, Anchovy and Chives

This innovative dish was stunning in appearance and a delightful surprise with the use of kangaroo and the presentation of beautifully placed chives in a taco. Complemented by the rich caramelised cream and salty anchovy, it truly makes this starter a complex flavour profile.

Pecorino Brioche Doughnut with Smoked Onion Powder and Caviar

An exciting fusion of flavour potential. This buttery doughnut combines the salty tang of pecorino cheese with a hint of smoked onion powder and luxurious caviar. An adventurous combination that was interesting, though nothing noteworthy, has the potential to be remarkable.

House-made Sourdough with Fresh Mascarpone Butter

The bread was remarkably soft and fresh and went perfectly with the indulgent mascarpone butter. We hastily requested more bread as we loved the butter and wanted to save every bit!

Yellow Fin Tuna With Pistachio Cream & Cos Lettuce

A beautifully composed dish with a simple appearance at first. However, once you break through the green ball of delight, you'll be met with the seasoned tuna enhanced by the nutty pistachio cream and complemented by an assortment of textures from the cos lettuce and miso cream. Then, topped with Vietnamese mint oil, lemon myrtle and herbs, there's a vast herbaceous and aromatic sensation that comes with this dish.

Port Lincoln Calamari With Broccolini & Koji Butter

Another gorgeously presented dish upon first sight. The calamari was tender and subtly flavoured, and the koji butter infusion added a unique flavour profile that's beautifully presented, along with broccolini shoots and garlic chives. This dish will leave you feeling bubbly!

Second Serving of Bread

While the second serving of bread offered an intriguing twist with its caramelised crust and a hit of coffee, it didn't quite surpass the simple perfection of the first serving. However, receiving more complimentary bread is always welcomed, so I have no complaints.

Murray Cod With Macadamia & Mustard Greens

A standout dish with perfectly cooked Murray Cod. Served with macadamia cream and squid ink sauce, it's a beautiful combination of flavours presented intriguingly, with each element shown as a standalone piece of art.

Rangers Valley Wagyu Beef Tri-Tip with Mushroom & Roasted Onion

This is a main dish that genuinely showcases the rich flavour of Wagyu with perfectly roasted beef and a delicious crust to boot. The bar remains high with its supplement of a mushroom and onion roast, the freshness of the lettuce and a hit of wasabi leaf.

Mead Vinegar Custard with Frozen Raspberries & Strawberry Consommé

A stunning dessert both in presentation and taste. The mead vinegar custard was a perfect equilibrium of tart and sweet and has been beautifully paired with frozen raspberries and the sweetness of a fragrant strawberry consommé.

Roasted Barley Koji Ice Cream with Pear & Roasted Marsala Twill

This is another astounding dessert from Sixpenny. The ice cream dish was a delightful end to the meal, with its pleasantly aromatic roasted barley and koji (roasted rice grain) paired with sweet pear and lightly toasted Marsala twill for that bite. It's dominant in the creamy and crunchy elements that I love.

Chocolate Mousse Cake, Hazelnut Crust

A special treat to mark the occasion, this complimentary chocolate mousse cake was rich and luxurious, with a crunchy hazelnut crust adding a delightful textural contrast. It's the best free cake I've had from a restaurant ever! However, for a non-special occasion, there is an option to order the cake for $15 that serves 2-4 people.

Ginger Canelés, Madeline & Fresh Cookies

The ginger canelés had a nice texture, although I noticed a soapy aftertaste, which was unexpected and, I believe, unintended. The madeleines and cookies, however, were a delightful end to the meal as they were freshly baked and still warm.

  • Ordering more than one drink throughout your course

Final Words

Sixpenny offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience that differentiates itself from other high-end restaurants. From the cosy ambience to the innovative dishes, it's a journey worth taking at least once. Despite the slower pace for dietary accommodations, the meticulous attention to detail in food and service makes Sixpenny an unmissable destination for those seeking culinary brilliance outside the hustle and bustle of the CBD.
