Texas Inspired Smoked Sausage Link With Jalapeno

TL; DR | Summary

Smokey Sue's is an American BBQ franchise with mouth-watering meats. There's a choice of ribs, brisket, sausage, burgers, fried chicken, and pork belly. Taste the delicious spices of the south on your next casual night out in this little pocket of Penrith.

Smoky Sue's Review

Full disclosure, I was invited to try out the food at Smoky Sue's for free. However, I would happily pay for it!

The American BBQ meats are something to write home about. I would quickly come back as a paying customer with a group of friends.

With a spacious setting, plenty of seating, and a bar area, it's a great place for a group gathering to enjoy some good eats.

The service is attentive with the staff offering recommendations and suggestions on food and cocktails.

Whilst this review is based on the Penrith location, I'd highly recommend a visit to either location (the Maroubra restaurant is the original).

The Food At Smoky Sue's

There's no question about it, the menu at Smoky Sue's is massive! You can tell by its size alone in my photo.

The choice is difficult and the burgers, burritos, and tacos are very tempting. However, you can't stop by Smoky Sue's and not try their smoked meats.

Choose from a selection of sausages, fried chicken, pulled pork, beef ribs, brisket, and pork belly.

The meats are served with tasty house-made sauces on the side and you have the option of making it a platter with fries, slaw, pickles, onions, and jalapenos.

There are also a few sides you can add on such as corn ribs, loaded fries, mac 'n' cheese bombs, chilli corn carne, and more!

It's a smorgasbord of American BBQ favourites.

Beef Ribs

The beef rib was a hit. The tender beef fell apart from the bone upon first contact. There's nothing better than some mouth-watering beef rib.

Pork Belly & Brisket

The pork belly was commendable, both flavourful while retaining moistness. It went down well.

The brisket was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavourful.

Sausage Link

The sausage link at Smoky Sue's is the stand-out dish. It's juicy and full of the right smoky flavours.

As the menu has a vast selection, it's nice to see some well-executed BBQ staples that'll tempt you to come back for more.

Jalapeno Chimichurri

The jalapeno chimichurri added an extra level of flavour that brought the whole combination together. This is a must-have sauce for any BBQ fan, as it has the perfect spice and tanginess.

Chicken Wings with Hot Sauce

I've tasted a lot of chicken wings across Sydney and I've come to expect them to be crispy or have a great sauce. Unfortunately, the wings at Smoky Sue's were dry.

The hot sauce provided relief, but I wouldn't classify it as a hot sauce. It was a tangy sauce with no heat.

Mac 'n' Cheese Bombs

The Mac 'n' cheese bombs sounded intriguing, but they are a miss.

They tasted similar to croquettes. The fillings were plentiful, but the overall dish was quite one-dimensional and boring to the palette.

Coleslaw

Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the coleslaw. It was bitter, difficult to eat, and completely lacklustre.

Unless they've changed the recipe, I would avoid the coleslaw at all costs.

I did give feedback to the team, so hopefully it does improve.

Milkshake

There's nothing better than a classic American milkshake. However, the salted caramel milkshake at Smoky Sue's lacked the salted caramel goodness. So, don't expect anything special from the milkshakes.

  • Brisket
  • Jalapeno Chimichurri

The Cheese and Jalapeno Sausage Link is a must order at this establishment. I agree, l do hope the Slaw which is offered on the Plate/Platter option does get an improvement as it was absolutely bitter and bland in flavour for me.

I did also enjoy the Pork Belly, Beef Brisket and Beef Ribs too for their selection of smoked meats.
