Food Recommendations: Top Chicken Spots In Sydney

By Lisa Nguyen   |   Published 23 February 2023

Craving some delicious chicken? Look no further! Here are 5 of the best chicken spots in Sydney that you must check out 👌.

Us Sydneysiders are serious about our chicken!  Patrol our food centres and you will find the humble chook to be a mainstay that both franchises and independent restaurants provide affordable and flavoursome takeway.  In this article, we have searched far and wide to provide a top 5 around Sydney to choose from - whether you are after fried chicken, charcoal chicken, BBQ chicken, Portuguese chicken, or Korean fried chicken.  What I've found in my review journey; is the options and the variety for chicken restaurants in Sydney really is endless!

If you think another option is being looked over or one I may have missed, let me know in the comments below or on my Instagram/Tiktok @bestspots.com.au and I'll credit you 😀

Number 5: Butter Surry Hills

Fried Chicken Wings

Starting off the list strong at number 5, Butter is a fried chicken restaurant many of us know for its quality, flavour, and unique flair.

If you love succulent chicken coated in a crispy batter, that's fried to perfection, then meet Butter; a funky restaurant and retail store combo tucked away in Surry Hills.

It's got flavourful chicken, fresh sneakers to try on, and a cool vibe to match.

You'll leave your meal in a delicious white meat haze and ... perhaps even be funkily fashionable.

The fried chicken wings; don't miss the flap as I believe these to be the best item on the menu. They're big, juicy, with the perfect crispy batter to match.  It's a must order item! KFC doesn't even compare in quality ... but beware the price difference!

Two tenders and a thigh piece will set you back $13.50. That cost is pretty steep in my books and the reason why Butter doesn't appear higher in the list.  It is chicken after all and if we were to draw a comparison for economies sake, an Original Tenders Box at KFC is about the same price.  And with that you get popcorn chicken, mash and gravy, a drink, chips, and dipping sauce.

So I'd recommend to give Butter a try - if only to see if the chicken is really worth the extra expense!

Number 4: La Mono Merrylands

La Mono Charcoal Chicken Combo

Next up, the chicken hostess with the mostest: La Mono Merrylands!

This isn't your standard corner charcoal chicken shop. Whether you're visiting the Merrylands or Casula location, the chicken definitely lives up to the hype. This juicy bird is their specialty item for a reason.

Plus, the revamped menu features all your favourite Lebanese favourites to compliment your charcoal chicken. Add their kebabs, skewers, burgers, snack packs and more to round out your dinner feast if you have the family to feed.

However, what sets La Mono apart is the number of sides, salads, and desserts on offer; this is really special.  I guarantee this - you won't leave the restaurant hungry.

Number 3: Hawa Charcoal Chicken Granville

Hawa Charcoal Chicken

The charcoal chicken combo is an Aussie classic that's enjoyed all year, and you can't go wrong with Hawa's chicken in Granville.

The mouthwatering meat and aromatic garlic sauce, paired with crispy chips hit the spot every time my chicken cravings got crazy and I had to indulge. There's even a whole range of side dishes to choose from, so you can add falafels, tabouli, and hummus, because I bet when hangry you're itching for something extra as well.

Why does this take the top 3 spot? This restaurant is the real deal when it comes to their love of food!  There's truly great chicken and ethnic Lebanese dishes besides, reasonable prices, heaps of seating in the restaurant, easy access to parking, and more restaurants opening in the area soon. What more could you ask for? I'd even go as far to say that I prefer Hawa over El Jannah's 🙊

Number 2: Frangos Smithfield

Frangos Portuguese Chicken

Now, if you love Portuguese chicken, you're going to love Frangos.

Whether you prefer it quarter, half, or whole, it is charred with a hint of smokiness and slathered in a delicious marinade. Plus, the sauces available pair so well together, it's hard to resist pigging out here for an affordable yet healthy* fast food treat. (* healthy if you just stick to the chicken!  And good luck resisting the fries 😉)

The refreshed menu features succulent pork belly, gourmet burgers, and plenty of sides like Portuguese rice to fill your order.  So, if you're looking for a high-quality, quick, and easy feed, Frangos is one of my top recommendations in Sydney.  If you are near Smithfield, you would do well to pay them a visit and see what all the fuss is about.

The Best Chicken Spot: Super Nash Brothers Waitara

Fried Chicken Tenders With Southern Fried Spice Level

Are you ready for spicy fried chicken that you'll tell your grandkids about? Super Nash Brothers takes the top spot with their Southern Fried Chicken and luckily for us in the West, they've just opened a new location in Auburn! Super Brothers not only in name, to expand at this time says a lot about how much people like their chicken.

I personally, just can't get enough of their incredible, mouthwatering chicken. I dream about the hot and spicy flavours and the juicy marinated meat. It's hard to find good Southern style fried chicken in Sydney, but Super Nash Brothers has answered our prayers of what fried chicken should be.

What sets them apart is their seasoning and how they cook their chicken. It's simply unlike any other restaurant or fast food chain in Sydney.

Can't handle the spice? No problem! The original recipe is just as good as the spicy version without sacrificing quality ingredients and taste.
