Does this spot match the hype?

Tuga Pastries Review
If you're a pastry lover, Tuga Pastries in Alexandria should be on your radar for good bakeries. This inner-west Sydney bakery is usually full of customers, especially on weekends, but there won't be much wait.
The selection of baked goods from cakes to tarts, is fantastic, but one downside is the lack of labelling. You don't know what's what, as less than half the items have names. I found that I had to ask the staff while trying to remember the details of each baked good!
The bakery space is quite small and has limited seating, so I wouldn't recommend dining in unless you're okay with whatever form of seating you can get.
Your best bet? Grab your treats to go and enjoy them elsewhere.
And if you're after something savoury, you won't be disappointed either.
Think Reubens, focaccias, truffle toasties, and even cheeseburgers.
With so much variety, finding something new to try on every visit is easy.
But the go-to would be their signature Pastel de Nata (or Portuguese tart).

Tuga Pastries Menu | Can You Have Too Many Pastries?
The service is quick, and you're in and out in a flash as all the items (except the coffee) are already prepared. Onto the baked goodies below:
Chocolate Pavlova Cruffin
Cruffins are an interesting concept. You get the flaky layers of a croissant in a muffin shape.
Tuga tends to spruce up the flavour combination of the cruffins, and the one I had was the Chocolate Pavlova variation. The result is a flaky, chocolate-filled, and layered treat.
I'm not the biggest cruffin fan since I'd rather have a straight-up croissant or just the top of a muffin, but if you love the hybrid concept, this is a must-try.
Passionfruit Curd Tart with Lavender
If you're a passionfruit lover, this one's for you! The tangy curd hits just right, with the lavender adding a floral twist. I'm a huge tart person, so I always enjoy a well-balanced tart.
Pastel de Nata
A near-perfect Portuguese tart with crispy puff pastry and caramelised custard.
But just a heads-up, not all batches are created equal. A friend once got one undercooked and had too much liquid, so it can be a gamble.
However, lucky me, mine was beautifully prepared with the right amount of creaminess and flakiness without being overly sweet.
Fruit Danish with Peaches and Blackberries
This cute little danish is light, fruity, and has a flaky base. While it's not the most standout item, it's still enjoyable enough to order again.
Semolina Friand with Buttercream and Pecans
This friand is moist with just the right amount of sweetness. If you love mini cakes, it's worth grabbing.
Fully Encased Cheeseburger with Pickles and Mustard
A cheeseburger wrapped inside a thin, pastry-like bun. While I love the idea, the execution falls a little flat. The inside is drier and doesn't pack the same flavour punch as a traditional cheeseburger.
Nutella and Hazelnut Croissant with Frangipane Filling
A classic baked good featuring Nutella. It's got that chocolate hazelnut hit, and honestly, you can't go wrong here. It's a classic combo done right.

Jila Pastry with Angel Hair Jam and Vanilla Cream
This is one of my favourites as this is my kind of pastry. The delicate, thin, flaky pastry balances beautifully with the not-too-sweet vanilla cream. It also has the proper hit of the jam without being overly sweet and overpowering.
Syrup-Coated Doughnut with Toasted Meringue
This is only for doughnut lovers! It's sticky, sweet, and topped with lightly toasted meringue, which gives it an interesting texture. Otherwise, it's your usual doughnut.
RECOMMENDED
- Signature Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Tart)
- Jila Pastry, if you come across it
- Trying out the savoury options as well
Final Words
Tuga Pastries is for those who love high-quality and creative baked goods but do not want to travel to the city. The lack of labels is a hassle, as you want to know what you're ordering, but the variety and ever-changing menu make up for it. If you're planning a visit, opt for takeaway and get there early to snag the best picks.
