Vecino Gourmet Chicken & Tacos Review

Vecino in Canterbury is a solid 9/10 for vibes. If you’re after somewhere Insta-worthy, Vecino has you covered. Think cool, colourful, and full-on Mexican décor with a funky edge. It’s definitely a fun place to sit and chill.

Vecino Canterbury Menu

Vecino does a Korean-Mexican fusion menu. It’s an interesting mix, with a separate cash-only section (not pictured) for large combo style meals, which was a bit unusual.

They’ve got a big drinks list, and their signature cocktails can be made as mocktails too – a small detail but appreciated.

Watermelon Ju

Soju-based watermelonade topped off with a watermelon ice block.

This soju based cocktail tastes like those watermelon lollies, not fresh watermelon – which might be a plus or minus depending on your tastes.

I liked the fun ice block included, but the drink was too sweet for me. That said, it hides the alcohol well and it’s big enough to feel like you’re getting value for money.

Tacos

Stir Fried Spicy Pork Tacos

Marinated Korean style spicy pork, cabbage slice, pico de gallo, gochujang aioli, sour cream, and guacamole.

These are one of their bestsellers. They’re tasty, but also very saucy – to the point that the taco ends up being soggy and the spice gets lost. Still decent, but a bit messy.

Grilled Chickpea & Cauliflower Tacos

Dukkah, lime juice, alfafa, and teriyaki sauce.

The flavours are good, but the teriyaki sauce is overly sweet and kind of throws off the balance. I would have preferred something a little less sugary. But if you’re looking for a vegetarian option, this one is okay.

Beef Nachos

Chilli con carne, house made nachos, mozzarella cheese, black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, Mexican salsa, and sour cream.

Sounds great on paper. In reality, it’s too sweet and tastes artificial. The sauce tasted like bottled tomato sauce and the cheese gave off that jarred American cheese vibe. Not great.

It also had the classic nacho problem: the ratio of toppings and chips didn’t work.

Honestly, I’ve made better nachos at home. For $18.50, I expected better.

RECOMMENDED

  • Order a cocktail
  • Visit during lunch when it’s quiet

Final Words

I really wanted to like Vecino. The idea of Korean-Mexican fusion is cool, but the flavours didn’t hit the mark for me.

Too much sugar, too many sauces, and not enough fresh, balanced ingredients.

That said, I saw quite a few takeaway and delivery orders going out – so maybe it works better for others. Just not for me.
