Does this spot match the hype?

TL; DR | Summary
Vinh Phat Review
As someone who's been to Vinh Phat countless times, I can confidently say this is the go-to spot for yum cha in Sydney. No other yum cha joints compare to the consistency of flavour and price that Vinh Phat offers. I've tried many places in various regions of Sydney, but I always end up back here. If you don't live near Cabramatta, it's definitely worth the commute.
This is a fair warning from me if you're unfamiliar with Cabramatta. The parking situation will be competitive, as spots fill up early in the day. And even when you arrive at Vinh Phat, you can expect the restaurant to always have plenty of diners lining up (especially on weekends!).
If you arrive after 10 a.m., you'll likely come across a line of hungry diners stretching from their stairway onto the streets. It's worth waiting for a reasonable time as once you're in, you can expect to be eating as soon as you sit. It helps that their space is huge, with extra seating areas opening up to handle the rush during peak dining times.
I find that even though the queue can be long, it'll be about a 25-minute wait as their service tends to be fast. So don't worry; the line will frequently move, so it won't be that bad.
Note that you can have someone else wait while you make your way, but they will favour diners with all the parties there (or close enough).
Prices here are standard for yum cha, but considering the quality of the food, it's well worth it. The traditional yum cha style service adds a quick service element as the carts come rolling around, offering plenty of steaming hot and fresh options. They literally come out from the kitchen as soon as they're ready.
The portions are fair, and the variety is vast. It's perfect for any regular yum cha eater and a great way to influence first-timers to start eating yum cha Vinh Phat style!
Vinh Phat Yum Cha Menu | The Best In Sydney
You can expect the typical "customer service" that you tend to get at most traditional Asian restaurants, where you're served quickly and on your way out. On the flip side, however, it's yum cha food that you'll return for years (like myself).
You'll find below a list of yum cha menu items you can expect at Vinh Phat:
Har Gow (Steamed prawn dumplings)
I must order these dumplings every time I visit. It's a prawn mix within a soft and squishy dumpling wrapper. It's a yum cha classic and one of my favourites, and I tend to order two servings.
If you've never tried har gow, read my blog post to learn all about them: Har Gow: 8 Tips for Perfect Dim Sum Shrimp Dumplings.
Siu Mai (Chinese steamed pork dumplings)
Another yum cha staple is pork dumplings. Sometimes, the pork is overcooked, but it is usually freshly steamed and delicious. I personally find the meat too dense, but I know plenty of people who enjoy this dumpling.

Pork and prawn steamed dumplings
This is a different take on Siu Mai, with a more generous pork-to-prawn ratio. I prefer this version, as the prawn adds a bit of a surf-and-turf experience.
Steamed prawn rice noodle rolls
It's an absolute must-have for me every time! The silky-smooth rice noodles wrapped around juicy prawns are an irresistible yum cha staple, and it's my go-to hack for scoring extra soy sauce to dunk my other dumplings in.
Chicken feet in sauce
This is one of those love-it-or-hate-it dishes, but for me, it's fantastic. The tender skin has a rich sauce, but be prepared to work through those little bones!

Prawn spring rolls
Unique to Vinh Phat, these are a standout. They have a thin bean curd exterior, are packed with prawns, and are served with a tangy plum sauce.
Do yourself a favour and order extra. I promise that you won't regret it.
Egg tarts
I'm not the biggest fan. The egg flavour is too strong for me, but they're wildly popular with others who like this dessert. This dessert is only worth it if you can't be bothered walking to an Asian bakery in Cabramatta to buy one or if you enjoy the eggy sweetness.

Beef tripe
Beef tripe's appearance and texture will always be an acquired taste for most. But if you can get past all that, the savoury liquid it comes with makes it worth trying at least once. While I'm not a fan myself, I know many frequent yum cha eaters who order this every time. If you can eat offal, then you'll enjoy this dish.
Fried Calamari
I found that other yum cha establishments do fried calamari better. While this is not the best I've had, it's still a tasty option when craving something fried. It's light and crispy and hits the spot if you're after something familiar.

Final Words
Vinh Phat is Sydney's best yum cha by far, and I've visited the CBD, Burwood and Eastwood. This place ticks all the boxes from the classic selection of dishes for a solid yum cha experience. Always plan ahead by arriving as early as possible (or have someone who does so they can line up).
