An inviting Chinese Korean fusion restaurant

Designed with wooden tables and chairs, the restaurant space is warm and welcoming. The walls are adorned with photos of the dishes presented elegantly, which gives the restaurant a touch of refined sophistication.

Tasty food & Friendly Service At All Times

Ordering your next bowl of noodles has never been easier. Each table has a QR code that you scan to access the menu. The Zhang Chef menu is condensed to showcase the restaurant's specialties, so it's easy to find something tasty to eat.

Despite it's popularity, the restaurant is not overly busy during peak hours, and the spacious seating almost guarantees you'll be able to walk in and get a seat straight away.

Once you select your meal and submit your order, the code is sent to the kitchen, and your food is delivered promptly. It's a simple and easy process.

Similar to other Korean BBQ restaurants, you'll also receive complimentary sides of kimchi and pickled radish to cleanse your palette in between dishes or to enjoy as a pre-feed.

However, as of my last visit, the pickled radish was the only complimentary side. I do hope the kimchi makes a comeback soon, as it is a classic Korean side dish.

Compared to other noodle options in the city, it's not the cheapest meal you'll find. Furthermore, the meat and seafood toppings aren't the most generous, but I still think you get decent value for your money because each dish is cooked in a traditional, authentic Korean style with years of culinary experience.

Jajangmyeon / Noodles In Black Bean Sauce

The black bean noodles are definitely the star of the show. I recommend selecting at least one dish that contains this sauce.

In particular, the Jajangmyeon noodles are cooked to perfection with more than enough sauce coverage, so you'll get a fantastic savouriness with each bite. The black bean sauce is the Goldilocks of sauces. Not too watery, not too thick, it's just right.

The noodles are handmade and handpulled by the chefs in the kitchen, so you know you're getting a high quality bowl of noodles made with love.

Seafood Noodle Soup

If an aesthetically pleasing bowl of noodles or a spicy seafood soup is more your style, look no further than the seafood noodle soup. There are prawns, mussels, squid, fresh, chewy noodles, and a mild heat that isn't too overbearing. The soup is plentiful, so you'll enjoy a good spoonful of broth with each bite of your noodles and toppings.

The downside is that there's a lot of onion, encompassing about a third of the dish. I love onion, but the ratio was unbalanced and not enjoyable.

The soup base is very similar to shin ramen, but it could use more salt or fish sauce to add more depth of flavour. In addition, it could also use more seafood as there was only one mussel.

Overall, it's a dish that could use some work to elevate the experience.

Last Thoughts

With a lovely owner and humble staff, Zhang Chef is my go-to restaurant for my black bean noodle satisfaction.

The Jajangmyeon is more than enough to get me through those doors again, and I'm more than willing to try other dishes on the menu so I can recommend even more!

So, if you're looking for some seriously good Chinese-Korean noodles in Sydney, look no further. Zhang Chef will not disappoint!
